South Kilworth Shines Bright: A Christmas Story of Community Spirit
A few years ago, a simple question was put to the Parish Council:
“Why can’t we brighten up South Kilworth atChristmas? Why can’t we have a village Christmas tree?”
Inspiredby the idea, the Parish Council began planning. The vision was a large Christmas tree on the pavement opposite the pub — a festive focal point for the whole village. Newcomers Tim and Cerys Wood, then renovating The Old Rectory, generously offered to supply electricity for the lights. John Berry volunteered to install them. A magnificent 20‑foot tree was sourced froma local supplier. Everything was ready.
But there was one thing no one had anticipated: the sheer cost of making it official.
Highway licences, site plans, liability insurance, accredited installers, safety inspections, consultation periods — the list grew longer and more expensive. The total ran into many hundreds of pounds. The Parish Council felt strongly that this was not the best use of villagers’ council tax.
Then Tim stepped in with a solution that changed everything: “No worries — I can put outside lights on atree in my garden.”
And what a difference that simple act has made.
This year, the Rectory’s Christmas lights have truly put South Kilworth on the map. Drivers passing through cannot help but slow down and admire the glowing “Merry Christmas” shining proudly from the heart of the village. It has become a landmark of warmth, generosity, and festive cheer.
So from all of us: Bravo, Tim and Cerys —and thank you for lighting up South Kilworth.
